In a world controlled by the Guarantee Committee, people are closely monitored to ensure everything they do follows the streamline protocol which only presents history and literature in truncated snippets approved by the government. While fifteen-year-old Angela hates everything about the rules, her parents obediently follow them to prevent the terrible punishments facing those who rebel. But when Angela's grandfather is sent away for not maintaining a heart rate that meets government standards, she joins forces with an underground resistance movement where she falls in love and fights to change a world that seems to have gone terribly wrong.
